5 skills you will learn on the PTLLS course

PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) is a practical course aimed at development of skills necessary in effective teaching. Some of these skills include planning, timing, presentation, handout designing and observation skills.

Planning skills are important when preparing for a course or lesson. Clear lesson structure is one of the things discussed on the course. It is essential to include all parts of the lesson in a logical order and make sure the activities are timed and work towards lesson aims and objectives. The same principles apply to course planning, although in a greater scale.

Timing is practiced in relation to the micro-teaching lessons and lesson plans. Students learn how to estimate length of activities and teach following the plan. Timing is important not only to meet students’ needs, but also to be able to work in a team.

Presentation skills are practiced when delivering the micro-teaching lesson. Students learn how to use various materials and resources to aid their presentation. Also, it is useful to learn how to make the best out of the teacher talking time and focus on the lesson aims.

The efficiency of teaching materials is a good way to demonstrate professionalism. Students practice designing clear and up-to-date handouts in order to teach effectively.

Observation skills help teachers monitor classroom and offer support where needed. These skills are practiced during micro-teaching lesson both from the point of view of a deliverer of the lesson and a student.

Although you might already possess some of these skills,  formal practice is a way to keep them fresh and develop further.
