CTLLS optional units – what they involve


CTLLS optional units provide a range of opportunities for specialist skills and knowledge to be recognised within the qualification.

They offer learners a chance to enhance their professional expertise in a particular area which is not covered in the key qualification requirements.

Thus learners can demonstrate their knowledge, skills and experience in working in their specific field of teaching and get recognition for it.

Optional units help to make the qualification more relevant to each individual learner as well as offer learners an opportunity to choose something that reflects their current or future teaching responsibilities.

Optional units vary in size and content. They cover such areas as:

– coaching and mentoring; developing and using resources;

– equality and diversity;

– inclusive practice;

– delivering specialist subject;

– understanding and managing behaviours in a learning environment;

– working with the 14 – 16 age range, and others.

The amount of work that has to be completed depends on your choice of unit. However most assignments require research in the field of study, a written assignment on the findings and reflective account on own practice.

For their research students can use printed sources such as books, journals and magazines, as well as online materials. All sources must be acknowledged properly in the assignment, and the correct method to do that is explained on the course.

A reflective account involves students reflecting on their experience in teaching that is relevant to their choice of optional unit and identifying what they have learnt in their practice, what areas require development as well as what to do in order to improve their teaching in future.

Learners are encouraged to be clear and concise in their assignments, keep to the point and convey the main message without deviating from the subject. For all assignments there is a recommended word count which students are encouraged not to exceed.

It is possible to choose more than one optional unit, and then learners have to complete work required for all optional units that they have chosen. Usually students choose a unit or units that they already have some experience in or something that they are planning to work on in the future. Sometimes learners have some personal interest in one of the units and that determines their choice.

The choice of an optional unit and the work involved in completing it is discussed during the course. It is explained to learners how the assignments have to be submitted and each assignment is given a deadline. Guidance and support with completing the assignments is provided during and after the course in person, by phone or email so that each candidate is given the best possible chance to show their knowledge and skills.
