CTLLS assessments – what they involve

One of the requirements in order to achieve the CTLLS award is an assessment in your workplace.

This means that our assessor would go to your workplace to assess you teaching your students. This can take plain various workplaces. Some of our students teach in classrooms so they would be observed there, however, some teach on different sites, for example, warehouses, building sites, factories and others, and our assessor would go to observe them there. The venue for observation depends on the student. If a student does not have a permanent teaching/ training position they will still have to complete the workplace assessment. In this case students usually volunteer or substitute someone in a teaching / training role. It is up to the learner to organise this.

Observation is carefully planned by the student and the assessor. Observation date depends on the availability of the student as well as our assessor, therefore, it is a good idea to plan the dates early ahead. Once the date is agreed, candidate usually provides all relevant information on location of the venue and timings as well as all other details that the assessor should have.

Prior to the observation the candidate would have completed a Scheme of work (course plan) and Lesson plans for the course that is going to be observed. Although only a minimum of three hours has to be observed, it is a good idea to have all the plans ready for the assessor. It is advisable to submit them before the observation so that the assessor can have a look at them and suggest any amendments if it is necessary. Information about what to include in the three hours teaching is provided and explained on the course. Normally the assessor wants to see a good structure, inclusive teaching methods and materials, good subject knowledge, professional and approachable teaching style as well as a minimum of 30 minutes long assessment activity. The choice of methods and materials is up to the learner as long as they can justify their choice, however, if students require guidance and support it would be provided either prior to the observation, during it or afterwards. Templates of the Scheme of work and Lesson plans are provided at the beginning of the course.

Observations are usually planned to take place after the course so that students can implement everything that they have learnt on the course. Therefore it is important to attend all classes, actively participate and learn on the course because all the new knowledge and skills help students to complete their Scheme of work and Lesson plans as well as do the observation confidently. After the assessment feedback is provided on all aspects of the observation and suggestions are given on how to improve students’ teaching practice in future. Therefore, it is a rewarding experience for both the student and the assessor.
