Is it a legal requirement to have an AED?

There is no legal requirement at present to provide and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) but liability might arise under common law for failure to take adequate safeguards to protect members of the public, staff or contractors present at a facility.

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 do not prevent an employer making an AED available which could be of benefit to their employees or members of the public.

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a small portable device that allows the user to deliver a defibrillation shock to a casualty in cardiac arrest but only if the casualty requires it.
