The purpose of the City and Guilds 1886 award is to provide a qualification for those who want to train others to deal with any type of conflict in the workplace.  It is a qualification that will equip you to train a wide range of workers, security operators, door supervisors and all those who deal with fellow workers and the general public.

City and Guilds 1886 is a Level 3 Award. This vocationally related award (C & G 1886) has been designed by City & Guilds to comply with government initiatives towards the National Qualifications Framework. It offers a flexible approach to provide individuals with the opportunity to achieve a qualification suitable for their individual learning and employment needs.

City and Guilds 1886 Level 3 Certificate in Conflict Management Training is linked to the knowledge and understanding requirements of the SIA (Security Industry Authority) specification for Security Guarding and the City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ in Providing Security Services. The qualification also enhances the required knowledge and understanding of units within the Managing Work Place Violence National Occupational Standards (ENTO).

The SIA has specified Conflict Management training and assessment as a requirement for licensing for all frontline security staff.  Trainers who deliver Conflict Management training for the qualifications for Licensing will be required to hold a SIA recognised and OFQUAL accredited qualification in the teaching of scenario based Conflict Management.

This course is designed to provide qualified trainers with the skills and knowledge required to deliver Conflict Management training to security staff, in accordance with the requirements of the SIA for the purposes of licensing.

Candidates are required to hold a minimum Level 3 teaching qualification (e.g. the City & Guilds 7303 certificate) before they can be accepted onto this course. For a list of all the suitable qualifications, please visit the SIA website: www.the-sia.org.uk.

Candidates will be able to assess and reduce the risk of violence in the work environment.  They will be able to identify behaviour that indicates an escalation towards violence and take appropriate measures to avoid, calm and defuse the situation as well as understanding post incident support and the necessity to report the circumstances to provide information for personal and organisational learning.  They will be able to demonstrate their ability to apply knowledge and understanding of Conflict Management into a variety of practical settings.

During the course candidates will design relevant and effective scenarios for training in Conflict Management.  They will also deliver and debrief interactive and scenario based sessions in the context of Conflict Management training.

Conflict management skills are needed  because workplace conflict is most likely to exist in any organisation coming into contact with the public and unfortunately the number of incidents is increasing in organisations outside the realms of policing and security, where conflict management is a well established requirement.   Incidents can range from verbal abuse to physical assault.

The key aim to this training is to enable the individual or team to defuse a situation effectively and safely by learning proven key skills. It also ensures an understanding not only how to identify aggressive behaviour before it escalates into violence but also how to recognise how their own actions might also escalate a situation.   The purpose of the City & Guilds 1886 scheme is to provide a qualification for those who want to train others to deal effectively with any type of workplace violence including the licensing requirements of SIA (also to teach City & Guild 1884 Level 2). It is a qualification that will equip you to also train a wide range of workers, within the Security Industry, Healthcare, Community Groups, Hospitality and private organisations that encounter or interact with the general public or fellow workers.

All potential delegates must hold a minimum of a City & Guilds Level 3 training qualification (7303) PTLLS or equivalent. Please note that any candidate currently enrolled on a Level 3 Teaching Qualification can also be eligible to undertake this qualification.

Effective conflict management training requires a thorough understanding of conflict management, so would be trainers must gain a good appreciation of the problems faced by staff in dealing with situations in the workplace.

This can vary between sectors and even between roles within sectors. This is why sectors and employers often demand a practical scenario based approach that ensures training is realistic and relevant. This approach requires skilled facilitation.  This skilled facilitation can be gained by attending a City & Guilds 1886 course.

Workplace conflict and aggression is a growing concern for many industries including those in the public sector. Where any chance of workplace violence or verbal abuse exists, employers have a legal duty of care to provide adequate training and resources to reduce the risks to staff, visitors and members of the public

This nationally recognised qualification has been developed in order to meet the legal requirements to fulfill the employers duty of care in providing Conflict Management Training to frontline staff.
