The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is the qualification for teachers/tutors and assessors who work in the lifelong learning sector carrying out a ‘full teaching’ role. This course can lead to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS).

The course facilitates a practical and analytical approach to your studies, guided by our team of course tutors who are expert educationalists. You will cover all aspects of training in the lifelong learning sector including planning and designing learning, teaching, assessing and supporting your learners.

The DTLLS course you will give you the opportunity to:

  • be involved with research into the lifelong learning sector

The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) provides you with  expertise and the opportunity to research the theories and current practice of education in the lifelong learning sector. The course also gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the transfer the theoretical underpinnings of good teaching to your own teaching practice.

The content of this Level 5 teaching qualification the course content is comparable to the PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate in Education) in Lifelong Learning and has similar value and credit with regulators, employers and the lifelong learning sector. Completing the DTLLS this will enable you to gain QTLS - Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status with the Institute for Learning which is the professional body for the lifelong learning sector.

DTLLS Course structure:

The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is a tutor-led course , enabling you to benefit from face to face contact with your expert tutor through the whole process.
The course consists of a series of classes throughout the year where you will be taught, guided, supported and assessed by your dedicated tutors. This will give you the opportunity to gain from the personal input and vast experience of our teacher training team here at Carlton Training. You will also interact with your fellow students on the course who are taking the course with you, so as a group you will learn, develop and study to gain the diploma in education and training.

The learning structure is classroom based throughout the course ensuring that you will be taught, guided, supported and assessed by your dedicated tutor. You will get the opportunity to gain knowledge, experience and skills from the personal input and vast experience of our teacher training team who are all expert educationalists. The course is also an opportunity to interact with your fellow students who are taking the course alongside you, so as a group you will learn and develop to gain the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

As well as the taught component you will also be involved with carrying out your own independent investigation and research into the lifelong learning sector.  Your tutor will support and guide you through this so that you can complete the written assignments needed to qualify
As well as your independent research on this course you will also be able to benefit from the personalised support from your dedicated tutor. You will benefit from one to one support, tutorials, feedback, suggestions and the tailored advice that our team of experts can provide.

Teaching observations – one of the requirements for gaining this qualification is for you to be observed carrying out teaching to your own candidates. Your allocated tutor will arrange this with you to suit your timetable. Observations of your teaching give you the opportunity to put into practice the theory and best practice techniques from the course into your own teaching. Observations also involve providing you with personalised coaching and individual support.

Entry Requirements

To enrol on the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) course you will need to have:

  • Your own candidates. - these are people who you are teaching, they could be colleagues, team members, pupils or workmates. The setting could be formal workplace or informal learning in a voluntary organisation.  You will need to accrue at least 100 hours of recorded teaching (this can be during or after the course)of which your tutor will observe you for eight hours.   
  • Qualification/s or experience in your subject area.
  • Suitable literacy and IT abilities as you will need to complete some research and investigation into the subject for the theory part of the qualification.

Training Course Content

This train the trainer course provides you with a minimum of 120 credits and is recognised by Ofqual and the LSIS.
The course content includes four main units. If you have CTLLS or CET already, only three are mandatory:

  • Teaching, learning and assessment in the lifelong learning sector
  • Develop teaching, learning and assessment in the lifelong learning sector
  • Theories, principles and models in lifelong learning
  • Wider professional practice and development in the lifelong learning sector

How will I be assessed?

On the DTLLS course you will have a dedicated tutor who will assess your work. To complete the course and gain your DTLLS qualification you will need to complete various assignments, both theoretical and practical. Your tutor will assess your work, and will also advise, support and guide you so that you can achieve the standard required by the Awarding body. There is no formal exam, however the DTLLS course requirements include that your tutor will observe and assess you teaching your own candidates on a minimum of eight observations/occasions

The Level 5 DTLLS qualification now forms a route to gaining QTLS - Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status.
The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is a high level qualification which gives the you evidence of  teaching and training skills, research and independent study as well as the professional strength to implement best practice and quality improvement in the teaching environment.
As a Level 5 course the content and validity is the same as the PGCE.
