Ever find yourself playing the role of a coach and feeling out of your depth? Maybe you’ve been the person a colleague turns to when they’re stuck? Or perhaps you’ve found yourself guiding a team member through challenges, asking the right questions rather than giving them quick fixes. These everyday moments are all coaching in disguise.

Why choose a coaching qualification?

Coaching might come naturally to some, but real impact comes from applying structured learning. A formal coaching qualification gives you the confidence, credibility, and competence to make coaching work in real-world settings.

Whether you’re an HR professional looking to support your team, a line manager aiming to boost performance, or someone pursuing a new coaching career, a recognised coaching course prepares you so you’re not just “winging it.” You’ll learn how to hold effective coaching conversations, structure sessions, apply proven models like GROW and ACHIEVE, and build ethical practice into everything you do.

ILM Coaching Accreditation: What You Need to Know

When choosing a coaching course, it’s important to pick an accredited pathway. At Carlton Training, our coaching programmes are accredited by ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management), one of the most respected awarding bodies for leadership and coaching qualifications in the UK.

ILM accreditation means your course content meets rigorous professional standards, and on successful completion of the course, you will have a skillset grounded in evidence-based frameworks, ethical codes of practice, and real-world application. That’s what sets you apart from the growing number of self-taught “coaches” providing unverified advice. This clear signal of professionalism gives clients and colleagues confidence in your ability to coach with structure, ethics, and skill too.

Comparing the pathways: which ILM level is right for you?

By taking ILM qualifications, you are setting yourself on a structured progression pathway. Level 3 is a good starting point for anyone developing their coaching approach, while Level 5 adds advanced tools for those already working in coaching roles. With every step, you gain new techniques, broader insight, and a clearer sense of your own coaching style.

Level 3 Coaching Courses: Getting Started

The ILM Level 3 qualifications are designed for professionals across all sectors who want to introduce coaching into their day-to-day role, whether that’s supporting a team, mentoring colleagues, or preparing for a future in coaching.

Level 3 Award in Effective Coaching

This 10-credit Award is perfect for those who want to quickly build a coaching foundation without a long-term study commitment. It’s particularly well-suited to first-time managers, team leaders, HR professionals, and anyone who wants to integrate coaching skills into their existing role.

The course focuses on core coaching principles, including listening techniques, goal setting, and ethical responsibilities. You’ll also become familiar with established models like GROW, giving you a clear structure for facilitating coaching conversations.

Designed with flexibility in mind, this course can be completed online at your own pace within 12 months, though most learners finish earlier. Alternatively, if you prefer hands-on learning, Carlton Training offers a face-to-face delivery option across three days. Both options allow you to practice your coaching skills in a supportive environment, with expert guidance throughout.

By the end of the course, you’ll have completed six hours of documented coaching, so you’ll have valuable real-world experience too.

Level 3 Certificate in Effective Coaching

If you’re ready to take your skills further, the ILM Level 3 Certificate takes a more thorough look at coaching. This qualification is great for managers, supervisors, and professionals who want to support team development and build coaching into their leadership style.

The Certificate will enable you to hold structured coaching sessions, deliver ongoing support, and manage coaching relationships with professionalism and confidence. You’ll explore advanced coaching techniques, learn how to build trust and rapport, and develop your ability to ask powerful, thought-provoking questions.

With up to 18 months to complete the course, you’ll have the flexibility to fit your learning around work and other commitments. You can choose between a fully online format or face-to-face delivery over three days, whichever suits your style best.

You’ll complete 12 hours of documented coaching practice as part of the Certificate. This real-world experience means that by the time you finish, you’re confident in your ability to coach effectively in the workplace.

Level 5 Certification in Effective Coaching and Mentoring

For experienced professionals ready to take their coaching further, the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring will give you advanced knowledge and experience of strategic application. It’s designed for more experienced managers, HR specialists, learning and development professionals, or those already coaching and mentoring who want to formalise their skills with a recognised, high-level qualification.

This course moves beyond the basics. You’ll explore complex coaching frameworks, ethical decision-making, and how to design, deliver, and evaluate coaching programmes within an organisational context. It takes a closer look at the potential impact of coaching as well as how to refine your approach and measure the outcomes of your coaching interventions.

The programme includes 18 hours of documented coaching or mentoring, giving you plenty of hands-on experience in real-world scenarios. Whether you’re coaching senior leaders, supporting organisational change, or building a coaching culture in your workplace, this qualification prepares you to lead with clarity and confidence.

You have up to 24 months to complete the course, and you can choose between flexible online study or an intensive four-day face-to-face option, both delivered by expert tutors who guide you through every stage.
