What Can I Teach with a PTLLS Qualification?

If you have ever considered teaching or training people then it’s possible you’ve come across the PTLLS qualification. At the very least, you may have heard people mention it within the education and training sector.

Nowadays, this qualification has been replaced by a newer qualification (which we’ll share with you too!), but PTLLS is still referenced by many education and training professionals, on CVs, resumes and job descriptions or required documents.

What is a PTLLS qualification?

PTLLS, which is often pronounced as ‘petals’, stands for Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector.  It was the main teaching qualification for anyone who wanted to teach adults, often known as an introductory qualification to education and training.

The PTLLS qualification was a great introduction to teaching adults in the workplace, in colleges, in adult education or in any number of voluntary or community settings.

The PTLLS qualification has now been replaced by the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

What does a PTLLS training course cover?

On completion of a PTLLS training course, you could use the skills it gave you to teach employees how to interact with customers and co-workers, how to deal with workplace systems, gain the skills and knowledge needed to pass a recognised qualification or simply update people on the latest procedures.

You’d also learn how to help employees develop the skills they need to become more effective members of your team.

For those teaching in a college setting, or with adults working towards a specific qualification, a PTLLS course covered the basic functional skills you needed to be an effective educator.

The fun teaching activities the PTLLS course covered helped you to make learning fun, deliver inclusive teaching and encourage participants to practice their new skills in a safe environment where they wouldn’t feel judged by others.

After all, there’s a lot more to education and training in the lifelong learning sector than simply standing in front of a class reading slides off PowerPoint!

As a new trainer on the course, you had the chance to practice teaching, observe others teach and learn the best ways to help your learners with their further education.

As we mentioned, the PTLLS qualification has now been replaced by the Level 3 AET qualification. This training course provides the same level of education and training as the PTLLS.

Which course has replaced PTLLS?

The PTLLS qualification has now been replaced with the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET). This is an introductory qualification for teaching assistants and individuals hoping to teach adults in the lifelong learning sector.

What Can I Teach With a PTLLS Qualification

What can I teach with a PTLLS qualification?

On the successful completion of a PTLLS course, you opened the door to a whole world of education and training, teaching and personnel development roles within the education and training sector.

This is because many Awarding Bodies regard PTLLS, or its replacement the Level 3 AET, to be essential in teaching or training roles.

In fact, for many regulated qualifications, holding PTLLS or Level 3 AET is considered the minimum requirement for anybody involved with education and training.

So basically, think of it as “keys to the door” if you’re going to be teaching, training or tutoring people who are on a recognised training course.

Another important aspect of holding the PTLLS qualification, or an equivalent, is that we live in an increasingly compliance-driven world where it’s important that things are documented and done in a formal manner.

Now, you might be rolling your eyes at the mere mention of the word ‘compliance’ or possibly even shuddering! For many of us, the thoughts we have when compliance, health and safety, risk assessments or monitoring are mentioned aren’t always positive.

However, you should consider how proper staff inductions, regular and up-to-date training, and designated onboarding sessions can significantly improve workplace conditions. This can bring on new processes, equipment or procedures, all of which add to the safety, professionalism and consistency of today’s modern workplace.

In short, gone are the days when new joiners were told to bring their own tea mug to work and follow one of the old hands around for a day to get the hang of things!

With the increased demand for workplace training, it’s often the case that if you want to gain any sort of promotion or advancement up the ranks you’ll be required to carry out some training for your team.  That’s why you’ll find holding teaching qualifications like PTTLS or Level 3 AET are a great advantage, whatever your industry.

If you’ve got a PTLLS qualification, then your company will be able to show that they’ve got a competent, qualified and able professional in charge of their education and training. It shows that you’ll be able to plan and teach effective sessions, whatever your subject.

To give you an idea of the broad range of sectors PTTLS and Level AET are relevant for, we’re had candidates from the following take the courses:

  • Medicine and medical devices
  • Health and social care
  • Traffic management
  • Construction
  • Railways
  • Electrical installation
  • Hair and beauty
  • Chemical engineering
  • Metalwork
  • Security
  • Social work
  • Care homes
  • Local government
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Catering
  • Public health
  • Forestry
  • Emergency Services

…and many more!

It’s clear that an ever-increasing number of industries are becoming reliant on training and developing their staff in a formal, professional way and holders of a PTLLS qualification (or equivalent) are a vital element in this.

Whatever sector you are in, you can be certain that with a PTTLS qualification, or Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), you’ll be in a position to train individuals in your chosen subject.
