What skills do I need to be a good trainer?


According to Russell Sarder, CEO of NetCom Learning, “80% of the success in the classroom depends on the quality of instructor.” The importance of a good trainer’s role in shaping future employees is well recognised by all businesses. Let’s take a look at some skills that these companies look for in trainers to judge their capability.

Communication Skills

Good communication skills are essential for any good trainer. They need to be able to show their knowledge to the trainees and motivate them to work hard.

  •   A good trainer will also be an active listener, who does more than hear what others have to say.


A good trainer needs to show passion in both learning and teaching others. They should be open and receptive to ideas and always look to increase their knowledge.

  •   Trainers who are flexible in their approach and responsive are rated better than others.

Co-operation Skills

An ability to work well with others is one of the most sought after qualities in a trainer. They should look not only to train, but mentor their own prodigy. Studies show that if trainees have a good bond with their trainer, they are able to learn quicker.

  •   Good trainers are able to sense the mood of the group and know how to work with it.

Good Analytical and Research Skills

All training work needs research and good trainers make sure to do plenty of it. They are also able to think quickly on their feet when analysing any trainee.

  •   A good trainer always challenges any hidden tensions or feelings to bring them up and use them to motivate the trainee.

Motivating Enthusiasm

People who are happy and enthusiastic about their work inspire others around them to work harder.

  •   Providing an energetic and conducive environment for trainees in the classroom is a decision the trainer controls.

Organisation and Time Management Skills

Good trainers should be good at organising, whether it’s the schedule or people. They need to be on top of their course material and schedule.

  •   A good trainer knows how to control, direct and steer the entire group positively.

Encourage response

All good trainers know that their job is only half done until they can get their trainees to respond with their opinions and answers. They make sure to involve any all members of the group, both outgoing and shy, in the training process.

  •   Good trainers will not only listen, but validate what other group members have to say and encourage them to be more responsive.


Trainers who aspire to be great, need to have a cool and calm head on their shoulders. They shouldn’t be perturbed by any discussion in the training room and should know better than to suppress the voice of the trainees. They should be able to use the tools in their hand to get the best out of the group, all the while preparing them for their role in the company.

  •   Mature trainers know how to deal with disruptive or difficult group members constructively.

Training is a two way learning process, where both the trainer and trainee gain something from the other. Active listening on the part of the trainer let’s them connect with their trainees to learn about their life experiences, while the trainees get to acquire professional skills from the trainer. Good trainers know how to utilise the training process to prepare individuals who will gel well with the company’s work culture.
